The integration of USD within Maya (even in Maya 2025) seems too rough to use it in production compared to Solaris for instance.
Do you know companies, even small ones, who render in Maya with USD ? what is their workflow then ?
For instance it doesn’t seem possible to create render passes with USD in maya, for instance how to create a shadow pass ? It seems imposible to change shape parameteres like visibility in reflection for instance or matte objects …All of this seems akward. If you have any input on this please share.
At this time there are some studios rendering in Maya USD as R&D or utilizing their own custom workarounds for current limitations. We are currently applying no small amount of effort in boosting rendering workflows in Maya USD as we know it’s an area where we are currently lacking. We have recently put some efforts into improving interactions with cameras in the viewport and are preparing to work on light linking. Other improvements will continue to follow as we consider filling the gaps as high priority.
