OpenUSD v25.05.01-alpha preview available on GitHub

Hi all,

An alpha preview of the upcoming v25.05.01 patch release is now available on GitHub under the v25.05.01-alpha branch. This contains fixes for a handful of issues that were reported shortly after the v25.05 release a few weeks ago. See the CHANGELOG below for more details.

This is a preview branch for testing. The release branch on GitHub and the v25.05 tag have not changed. We intend to officially publish the v25.05.01 release next Monday, 5/19.

I also wanted to call out the change in versioning scheme. In the past, patch releases were denoted using an extra letter, e.g. v25.02a. We’ve received feedback that the extra letter makes parsing version numbers more complicated for tooling, so going forward we’ll be using an additional version number instead.

Please let us know if you have any questions or feedback about this release. Thanks!

Hi @sunya. Thanks for making this available. Do you expect that your convention going forward will be that alpha will be a branch and rc will be tags?

No, at the moment we don’t have any plans to change to our conventions for normal releases – we’ll continue to use tags on the dev branch for both alpha and rc. Previews for patch releases are a special case where we can’t use this strategy – we can’t tag the dev branch since we only want to cherry-pick certain commits, and we don’t want to update release prematurely.

We have been toying with the idea of using branches for normal releases too, but don’t have anything concrete yet. If/when we do, I’d expect we’d have broader discussions before making any changes.
